It’s been far too long since Hungate’s last blog post, things have been busy busy busy! We all had great fun at the May Day Open Day and made some excellent garlands! Sadly there wasn’t a May pole to dance around. Hopefully there will be some pictures of the day to post soon.

As you will have seen in our last blog our Beginners Stone Carving workshop also went well.

On the subject of workshops I’m afraid to announce that next Saturday’s Beginning Pen and Ink workshop has been postponed. However, if this is something you’re interested in doing we have another workshop planned for Saturday 24th July. Here you can join a professional artist from Feltwell Art Club and use the beautiful surrounds of our 15th century church as inspiration for this pen and ink workshop. Booking is essential so if you’re interested give us a call on 01603 623254.

Finally, our centre manager left us to go on to bigger and better things in London. She’ll definitely be missed but we all wish her the best of luck with the new job!

Here at Hungate we like to get visitors involved by running various workshops where people get to have a go at some medieval inspired crafts. We’ve had a number of workshops with stained glass artist Lilian Shaw but last week we had something a bit different.

Last Saturday, another professional artist, David Holgate, ran a workshop looking at letter design in an introduction to carving flint. He has his own studio in Norfolk and has worked on commissions for some major companies. Recently he even carved a plaque that was unveiled by her majesty the Queen at Norwich Cathedral!

If you’re interested in trying something creative and a bit diferent Hungate has a number of workshops coming up over the next few months, including more with Lilian and David. There is also a new pen and ink workshop with Feltwell Art Club starting soon.

Visit Hungate Medieval Art’s website for more information for dates, prices and how to book your place! We hope to see you soon.

Good news! Hungate Medieval Art is now able to facilitate the hire of the beautiful redundant church of St Peter Hungate.

The unique 15th century building features a wonderful hammerbeam roof carved with angels, vibrant stained glass windows and an attractive tiled pammet floor. The building is very light and the traditional limewashed walls add to the sense of space and atmosphere of peace and serenity which reflects the building’s history.

The church has capacity for up to 150 people for a standing reception and 60 people seated. Our exhibition is permenantly installed for your guests to enjoy but our medieval pews can be moved to accommodate your event. The main floor space is level and the building has partial disabled access. The chancel is particularly suited for use as a stage. There is one WC with level access.

Hungate Medieval Art can also help with some of the necessary arrangements; providing equipment from tables and chairs to wine glasses or putting you in touch with caterers and other suppliers.

St Peter Hungate has been deconsecrated so we are not licensed for wedding ceremonies but we would however welcome small wedding receptions. Drinks receptions or business functions, parties or presentations, St Peter Hungate is an exceptional option.

A downloadable PDF of our new hire leaflet and associated rates is now available. For more information please contact; Dale Copley, Centre Manager. T. 01603623254 e. Dale.Copley@hungate.org.uk.

“Music in the Glass” looks at the depiction of musical instruments in stained glass windows across the county; recreating, animating and bringing to life music that has been sealed in glass for over 500 years.

Musical instruments are often pictured in stained glass being played by angel musicians. Norfolk has the greatest survival of medieval musical angels anywhere in the country.

Developed in collaboration with Hungate Medieval Art, the concert is illustrated by beautiful photographic images of Norfolk stained glass. Glass from over 20 parish churches – including Shelton, East Barsham, Ketteringham and Stradsett- is featured.

Experts believe that the musical angels – often found in the top part of the stained glass window known as the tracery lights- formed a heavenly host over the characters beneath. Medieval people associated heaven with music. In the medieval mystery plays, music may have been used to announce the arrival of characters with otherworldly characteristics.

The musical angels are also a reference to theological teaching which established music as an important part of medieval worship. For example, Psalm 150 says “Praise him with the trumpet, Praise him with the harp and lyre”. These instruments can be seen being played by angels in stained glass windows in Norfolk.

In fact, the angels play a full range of medieval instruments – including the psaltery, lute, harp, gittern, viol, shawm, bladder pipe and nakers- and this range is reflected in the Minstrels concert.

As many of these instruments will be unfamiliar a key part of the concert will be the chance to talk to the musicians about the instruments they play.

“Early music has a very different sound quality to that of a modern orchastra, string quartet or wind ensemble because of the different materials and construction techniques used in the making of the instruments. Minstrels Gallery play carefully reconstructed copies of medieval instruments.” Tony Scheuregger, Minstrels Gallery

“There is something about the stunning beauty and intensity of colour in stained glass that provides inspiration for the modern instrument copyist and certainly informs the performance of this wonderfully colourful and vibrant music”.

The concert premiers at Hungate Medieval Art on Thursday April 8th 2010 at 1pm.
Tickets are priced at £6 and are available before the event from Hungate Medieval Art at St Peter Hungate Church, Princes Street, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10.00-16.00 or T. 01603 623254 as well as on the day.

Hungate Medieval Art have beautiful high resolution images of stained glass angels playing musical instruments as well as images of Minstrels Gallery themselves.

The Minstrels are also available to do radio and television interviews.

Hello all.

Just a quick blog to let you know that Hungate Medieval Art’s spring/summer events leaflet is now available to download from the website.

For the kids there is a Medieval May Day event where you can have a go at glass painting and brass rubbing. Or perhaps your little one would like to have a go at making a stained glass panel or creating their own comic strip in one of our children’s workshops.

Adding to the stained glass workshops, we will also have workshops in stone carving and pen and ink. By popular demand there are also days out, travelling to some of the churches on our stained glass trails or you could come along and check out the Minstrels Gallery musical performance.

Finally, our Tea and Talking Points series will be continuing on the first Wednesday of every month.

There really is something for everyone on there!

You can find out more about the events on our website or click here to download the leaflet.

Good morning!

It’s been a long time since I posted a blog, December and January have gone so quickly! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and is having a good 2010 so far.

Hungate has been super busy, before Christmas there was the lecture from Loyd Grossman, fascinating and perfectly set in the new Hostry building of Norwich Cathedral, wonderful on a chilly December evening, I’ll be sure to post a review it on here. Then we had the children from the Young Archaeologists’ Club come to the church to help decorate it, great fun was had by all… until it came to cleaning everything up!

Anyway, enough about Christmas, what’s coming up in the shiny new year? I’m writing to bring news of the upcoming Tea and Talking Points talks, at which a visiting speaker comes to the church at explores an area of general interest followed by a nice chat and, of course, a cup of tea. Here’s what’s coming up over the next few months.

Wednesday 3rd February - Beating the Parish Boundaries in Georgian Norwich

Wednesday 3rd March - The Rosary Cemetery

Wednesday 7th April – The King Company Archive

All talks start at 2:30, costs £1 for the over 60s which includes refreshments.

The talks are really popular so if you’re worried you won’t get a place, or if you’d just like some extra information, you can contact the centre manager, Dale, by emailing Dale.Copley@hungate.org.uk or calling 01603 623254.

I’m a big fan of making things, Christmas Decorations included (my parents’ house is still full of Christmas things I made in primary school!) This workshop is perfect for all of you who feel the same.

The one day workshop is being run by professional artist Lillian Shaw and will teach you how to use the copper foil method to make some lovely stained glass style decorations to take home and hang on the tree. It’s suitable for beginners and those who have a bit of experience already.

The workshop is on Saturday 28th November from 10am until 4pm and costs just £36, which includes all the materials and tea/coffee. There are limited places so make sure you book early to avoid dissapointment!
